Why do some breeds have no published price?
Many NZ catteries don't publish prices online — Burmese, Persian, Russian Blue and Sphynx breeders in particular tend to quote per litter. For these breeds, expect the general NZ pedigree range and ask the breeder directly; a registered breeder will happily discuss pricing along with health testing.
Is it cheaper to adopt?
Almost always. NZ adoption fees ($150–$350) usually include desexing, vaccination and microchipping — worth several hundred dollars if paid separately. Pedigree cats do appear in rescue occasionally, and domestic shorthairs make outstanding companions.
Do cats go on the same microchip register as dogs?
No. Cats are registered on the NZ Companion Animal Register (NZCAR), which is separate from the council dog database. Most breeders and shelters microchip and register kittens before they go home — confirm this is included in the price.
