How much does a cat cost in NZ?
It depends heavily on the breed — use the table above. For the breeds we have checked against current NZ breeder pages and Trade Me listings, most pedigree kittens cost between about $800 and $3,500, and many catteries only quote on enquiry. SPCA adoption is $299 for a kitten under 5 months or $149 for a cat aged 5 months to 9 years, plus a $2.50 service charge. The purchase price is only the start — budget for food, vet care, litter and insurance.
Why do some breeds have no published price?
Many NZ catteries don't publish prices online and quote per litter instead. When we checked in September 2026, none of the Russian Blue, Sphynx, Siberian or Norwegian Forest Cat breeders we could reach published a price, and none of those breeds had kittens advertised on Trade Me. Ask the breeder directly; a registered breeder will happily discuss pricing along with health testing.
Is it cheaper to adopt?
Almost always. SPCA adoption fees are the same for every breed: $299 for a kitten under 5 months, $149 for a cat aged 5 months to 9 years and $75 for a senior cat (10+), plus a $2.50 service charge. The cat is already desexed, microchipped and vaccinated, and the fee includes lifetime registration on the NZ Companion Animal Register. Pedigree cats do appear in rescue occasionally, and domestic shorthairs make outstanding companions.
Do cats go on the same microchip register as dogs?
No. Cats are registered on the NZ Companion Animal Register (NZCAR), which is separate from the council dog database. Most breeders and shelters microchip and register kittens before they go home — confirm this is included in the price.
What ongoing costs should I budget for?
