Overview
The Scottish Shorthair (often referred to as the Scottish Straight) is the straight-eared sibling of the famous Scottish Fold. In any Scottish Fold litter, a portion of the kittens will inherit straight ears. Under New Zealand Cat Fancy (NZCF) rules, these are registered as Scottish Shorthairs. Crucially, because breeding two folded-ear cats results in severe, painful skeletal deformities, Scottish Shorthairs are the essential outcross partners used by ethical breeders to keep the Scottish Fold breed alive and healthy.
NZ ownership fit
Scottish Shorthairs possess a sweet, calm, and adaptable temperament, making them ideal indoor companions and highly suited for apartments and busy family homes. They are quieter, highly affectionate, and form strong, gentle bonds with their owners.
Care priorities
Because they do not carry the gene that causes folded ears, Scottish Shorthairs do not suffer from osteochondrodysplasia (the cartilage disease associated with the Fold). This makes them a significantly healthier and hardier choice. Their short, dense coat requires weekly brushing, and they thrive on a balanced diet to maintain their rounded, robust build.
