Cat Age Calculator NZ: Cat Years to Human Years
Curious how old your cat is in human terms? Enter your cat's age below for an estimate. Cats age fast in their first two years, then settle into a steadier rate — so a 2-year-old cat is already a young adult, not a kitten.

~24
human years (estimate)
This is a population-average estimate, not veterinary advice. Real ageing varies by breed, genetics and health. For your cat’s individual needs, talk to a registered New Zealand vet.
How the cat age calculation works
Your cat grows up fast: about 15 human years in their first year and roughly 24 by age two. After that, each cat year adds about 4 human years.
These figures come from veterinary life-stage guidance (AVMA / AAHA aligned). They are averages to help you picture your cat's stage of life — not a precise measurement. Breed, genetics, desexing and overall health all shift the real picture.
A note on accuracy
This tool gives a general estimate only and is not veterinary advice. If you have any concern about your cat's health, weight or ageing, please see a registered New Zealand vet, who can assess your individual cat.
New Zealand Veterinary AssociationCommon questions
How do you convert cat years to human years?
A common vet-aligned estimate counts a cat's first year as about 15 human years, the second year as about another 9 (so a 2-year-old cat is roughly 24), and then about 4 human years for every cat year after that.
Is a 2-year-old cat still a kitten?
No. By two years a cat is a young adult — roughly equivalent to a person in their mid-twenties. Kittenhood (rapid growth, vaccinations, socialisation) is mostly in the first year.
What age is a senior cat?
Cats are often considered mature from about 7 and senior from around 11. Indoor cats in NZ commonly live into their mid-to-late teens, so senior care — including more frequent vet checks — can span many years.
Do indoor and outdoor cats age differently?
The conversion is the same, but lifestyle affects health and lifespan. Indoor or supervised cats in New Zealand generally avoid many road, fight and predation risks, which is also better for native wildlife.
Is this calculator exact?
No — it's a population-average estimate. Breed, genetics and health change real ageing. For advice specific to your cat, talk to a registered New Zealand vet.
