FAQ
Where can I walk my dog off-leash in NZ?
Every local council sets its own rules. Generally, dogs must be on-leash in public places unless you are in a specifically designated off-leash dog exercise area. You must check your local council's maps and website for exact boundaries.
Are dogs allowed on beaches in NZ?
Beach access varies widely by council and season. Many councils ban or restrict dogs on popular beaches during summer months (e.g., from Labour weekend to Easter, between 9am and 7pm) to protect beachgoers and nesting wildlife like dotterels or penguins.
Can I take my dog to a National Park or DOC reserve?
Most National Parks and many Department of Conservation (DOC) reserves strictly prohibit dogs to protect native wildlife, especially kiwi. You must check the DOC website or look for specific 'no dogs' signs before entering conservation land.
Do I still need a leash in an off-leash area?
Yes, you must always carry a leash with you. Even in off-leash areas, your dog must be under continuous and effective voice control, and you must be able to leash them immediately if they become a nuisance or danger to others.
What if my council isn't listed here?
We cover many major councils but are continually adding more. If you can't find your council, please search their official website directly for 'dog exercise areas' or 'dog maps'.
