FAQ
Where can I adopt a dog or cat in NZ?
Start with the SPCA centre finder and Pet Rescue NZ (both nationwide), then check local rescues for your region. This directory lists verified organisations by region — Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago and more — plus national finders that cover everywhere.
What does adopting usually include?
Adopting from the SPCA or an established rescue typically means the animal comes desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and vet-checked, with a known temperament — a big head start over an unknown-background pet. Adoption fees are usually lower than breeder prices.
Is adopting better than buying from a breeder?
Both can be responsible choices. Adoption gives a home to an animal in need and usually bundles desexing, microchipping and vaccinations. If you do go to a breeder, see our guide on choosing a responsible dog breeder. Either way, plan for the real cost and the settling-in period.
How do I help if I can't adopt?
Fostering is one of the most useful things you can do — rescues usually cover food and vet costs while you provide a temporary home. Most of the organisations listed here take foster carers and volunteers.
Note: this is a verified starting directory, not an exhaustive list of every NZ rescue. Adoptable animals, fees and processes are managed by each organisation — always check their own website for current details. Run a rescue we should add? Get in touch via our guides.
