What this calculator includes
We split costs into one-off first-year items (getting your pet, setup gear, desexing, microchipping, first vaccinations) and ongoing annual costs (food, council registration, vet check-ups, flea and worm prevention, insurance, grooming, boarding and replacements).
The first-year total adds the one-offs to one year of running costs. The per-yearfigure is what to budget every year after that. Choosing "adopt / rescue" lowers the estimate because adoption fees usually include desexing, microchipping and initial vaccinations.
Every figure comes from our published guides — see cost of owning a dog, cost of owning a cat, the NZ vet costs guide, and the dog registration checklist.
A note on accuracy
This is a budgeting estimate, not financial or veterinary advice. It excludes major emergency vet bills — a single after-hours surgery can exceed a whole year's routine budget, which is why insurance or an emergency fund matters. For health decisions, talk to a registered New Zealand vet.
New Zealand Veterinary AssociationCommon questions
How much does a dog cost per year in NZ?
After the first year, owning a dog in New Zealand typically costs around NZD $1,800–$6,300+ a year, depending on size, food, insurance, grooming and travel. The first year is higher (roughly $2,100–$16,300+) because of one-off setup, desexing and gear.
How much does a cat cost per year in NZ?
Ongoing cat ownership is usually around NZD $1,280–$4,360+ a year — food, litter, preventative vet care, insurance and the occasional cattery stay. The first year is higher once you add adoption or purchase, desexing and setup gear.
Why is adoption cheaper than buying?
Adoption fees from the SPCA or rescues are usually lower than breeder prices, and they often already include desexing, microchipping and initial vaccinations — so you avoid several separate first-year vet bills. This calculator reflects that by bundling those costs into the adoption option.
Does dog size really change the cost that much?
Yes. Food, desexing, flea and worm prevention (which is weight-based) and gear all scale up with size. A giant breed can cost two to three times more to feed than a small dog, and insurance is often higher too.
Is this calculator exact?
No — it gives realistic NZD ranges based on PetMall's New Zealand cost guides, to help you budget. Your actual costs depend on your breed, region, your pet's health and your choices. For tailored advice, talk to your vet.
