Overview
The Mandalay is a cat breed developed entirely in New Zealand. It was created in the early 1980s by crossing Burmese cats with solid-coloured domestic cats, producing kittens with the build and eyes of the Burmese in rich, solid colours — most famously a deep, lustrous black. It is now recognised as its own breed by the New Zealand Cat Fancy, whose Standard of Points requires Mandalay type to conform in every way to the Burmese standard, with only coat colour and eye colour differing.

Mandalay cats are incredibly people-oriented and thrive in active New Zealand households. They possess a playful, energetic, and highly vocal nature, often following their owners from room to room. Their friendly disposition makes them excellent companions for families with children and other pets, provided they receive sufficient social interaction and mental stimulation.
Care priorities
With their short, sleek coats, Mandalays have minimal grooming requirements, needing only a weekly brush to remove loose hair. Because of their social nature, they do not do well if left alone for long periods; a companion pet or an active household is recommended. Ensure they are kept safe indoors or have access to a secure outdoor catio, as their curious nature can lead them into trouble.
