Overview
The Templecat is a distinct breed developed in New Zealand as the shorthaired counterpart to the Birman, produced by a shorthair outcross in much the same way the Exotic Shorthair was developed from the Persian. It was first recognised by CATZ Inc as a provisional breed under the temporary name "Birman Shorthair", and the breed name Templecat was granted in August 2001. The Templecat retains the defining characteristics of the Birman — the Himalayan pointed coat pattern, decidedly blue eyes, and the pure white "gloves" on the front paws and "gauntlets" up the back of the hind legs — but in a short, silken coat that is exceptionally easy to maintain.

Templecats inherit the gentle, quiet, and affectionate personality of the Birman, making them superb companions for apartment living and family environments alike. They are highly intelligent, quiet, and bond deeply with their owners, offering a calmer alternative to more demanding shorthaired breeds.
Care priorities
The short coat of the Templecat carries no undercoat and requires far less grooming than the traditional longhaired Birman, needing only a brush once or twice a week to keep it in peak condition. Ensure they receive regular dental checkups and high-quality nutrition.
