Maine Coon vs Norwegian Forest Cat NZ: Two Large Forest Cats Compared

5 June 2026

Maine Coon or Norwegian Forest Cat in New Zealand? Both are large, fluffy, and gentle — but they differ in size, temperament style, and what daily life looks like. Here's how to choose.

The Maine Coon and the Norwegian Forest Cat are both large, long-haired, gentle breeds with north-country forest origins. They're commonly confused — particularly in photos where both look like enormous, tufted, magnificent cats. They're meaningfully different in temperament and slightly different in size, and choosing between them is worth thinking through.

The size difference

Maine Coon: 5–10 kg — one of the largest domestic cat breeds in the world. A large male Maine Coon can reach 10 kg and carry themselves with considerable physical presence. Their rectangular body shape, long tufted ears, and bushy tail are distinctive.

Norwegian Forest Cat: 4–7 kg — still a large cat, but lighter than the Maine Coon. NFC females especially tend toward the 4–5 kg range. The NFC body is triangular in shape when viewed from the front; the Maine Coon has a more rectangular profile.

For NZ households with size constraints (litter box size, cat tree weight rating, carrier size), the Maine Coon's upper end (10 kg) requires specifically large equipment.

Temperament: dog-like vs independent outdoors-type

Both breeds have earned reputations as gentle, sociable large cats — but their underlying personalities differ in a way that experienced owners and breeders consistently note.

Maine Coon: Often described as "dog-like" — they follow their owner around, greet visitors, and are interested in what's happening rather than aloof from it. They chirp and trill (rather than yowl) and are often willing to be leash-trained. Their sociability is relatively constant — they tend to stay engaged with their family throughout the day.

Norwegian Forest Cat: The NFC's temperament reflects their origin as a Nordic outdoor breed. They are affectionate and gentle, but on their own terms — they initiate contact when they want it and retreat to observe when they don't. They are more independent and less demanding of attention than the Maine Coon. Their trainability score is slightly higher (4/5 vs 3/5), which may reflect their keener engagement when they're motivated.

The key difference: if you want a cat that actively seeks you out and participates in household life the way a dog does, the Maine Coon is the choice. If you prefer a large, beautiful cat that is affectionate without being clingy, the NFC suits that style better.

NZ climate suitability

Both breeds are designed for cold climates — their coats evolved in northern forests. In NZ terms:

  • South Island winters and high-altitude NZ conditions suit both breeds well
  • Auckland's humidity is manageable but means the coat needs monitoring for mats in damp weather — drying after wet-weather outings matters
  • NZ UV note: Both breeds have lighter-coloured areas on their ears and nose that can be susceptible to sunburn in NZ's high-UV environment (particularly October–April). Limit prolonged direct sun exposure.

Grooming

Both score 3/5 — similar requirements. Both have semi-long to long coats with a dense undercoat that sheds seasonally. Both need:

  • Brushing 2–3 times weekly (more during spring shedding)
  • Particular attention to the undercarriage, ruff, and tail where matting occurs first
  • NZ damp winters: ensure the coat is dried if the cat gets wet (both breeds may go outdoors)

Neither requires daily brushing at minimum, but both need consistent maintenance to prevent mat formation. If you're not prepared for regular brushing of a large-coated cat, neither breed is right for you.

Compatibility with kids and other pets

Maine Coon (kids 4/5; other pets 3/5): Excellent with gentle, older children who understand how to interact. Their large size makes them resilient, and their patient nature helps. Slightly lower other-pets score (3/5) may reflect their tendency to prefer to be the main pet rather than sharing space.

Norwegian Forest Cat (kids 5/5; other pets 4/5): Scores maximally with kids — they are notably patient and adaptable. Their higher other-pets score suggests better multi-animal household compatibility.

For families with multiple pets or young children, the NFC's higher compatibility scores are relevant.

NZ availability

Maine Coons are among the most popular pedigree cats in NZ — registered breeders are relatively accessible. Prices vary; confirm current pricing with breeders through New Zealand Cat Fancy.

Norwegian Forest Cats are less common in NZ — fewer registered breeders, waiting lists apply. Prices run $1,200–$3,000 NZD. The NFC's rarity in NZ means waiting is typical.

Which is right for you?

Choose a Maine Coon if:

  • You want the largest, most impressive cat on this list
  • You specifically want the dog-like, engaged personality that follows you around
  • You're prepared for the largest cat tree, litter box, and carrier sizes
  • Maine Coon breeders are accessible for you

Choose a Norwegian Forest Cat if:

  • You prefer a large cat that is affectionate on its own terms (less demanding)
  • You have a multi-pet household or young children (higher compatibility scores)
  • You want a slightly longer average lifespan (12–16 vs 12–15 years)
  • The NFC's more independent personality appeals more

Both are unsuitable if:

  • You want a low-maintenance, short-coated cat
  • You're not prepared for regular significant grooming
  • You live in a very hot NZ climate without air conditioning (both breeds have warm-weather limits)
