Keeping Rabbits Warm in Winter NZ: Outdoor Hutch and Indoor Setup Tips
5 June 2026
Keeping rabbits warm in winter NZ: dry bedding, draught-proof hutches, frost checks, indoor moves and safe routines for Kiwi rabbit owners.
The quick answer: keeping rabbits warm in winter NZ means keeping them dry, draught-free, sheltered and still able to exercise. Rabbits cope better with cool weather than heat, but a wet, windy hutch in a South Island frost or an Auckland downpour is not safe comfort. Add deep dry bedding, block wind without blocking ventilation, check water, and move rabbits to a sheltered indoor-style setup during rough weather.
The useful temperature range
RSPCA UK gives 10-20 C as an ideal range for domestic rabbits and advises considering a move indoors or into a protected outbuilding if temperatures drop towards freezing. Use that as a care guide for NZ, especially in Canterbury, Otago, Southland, inland Waikato frosts and exposed rural sections.
Do not swing rabbits suddenly from a cold outdoor hutch into a hot lounge beside a heater. Big temperature jumps can be stressful. A sheltered garage, laundry, unused room or shed can be better than a heated living room, provided it is safe, ventilated and free from vehicle fumes.
Winter-proof the hutch
For outdoor rabbits, the hutch and run need an MOT before the coldest nights:
- roof watertight and sloped so rain drains away;
- hutch raised off wet ground;
- sleeping area packed with clean dry hay or straw;
- wind blocked on exposed sides;
- ventilation still present to avoid damp air and ammonia build-up;
- run not sitting in mud or puddles;
- predator-proof latches checked after storms.

Dry bedding matters more than extra bedding
Adding bedding helps only if it stays dry. Wet bedding chills rabbits and can irritate skin and feet. Spot-clean toilet corners daily and do a fuller clean regularly. In frosty areas, check water bowls and bottles morning and night so water has not frozen or jammed.

Food, hay and winter activity
Rabbits need constant access to hay year-round. Outdoor rabbits may use more energy staying warm, but do not replace hay with random treats. Keep the diet steady: mostly hay, suitable leafy greens and measured pellets if used. For the base diet, see What Do Rabbits Eat? NZ.
They also still need exercise. Moving a rabbit into a tiny cage for winter is not a welfare upgrade. If the lawn run is too wet, create a safe pen in a garage, laundry or spare room, away from cords and household hazards.
Bonded rabbits and warmth
Bonded rabbits often rest together and share warmth. A single outdoor rabbit can be more vulnerable to cold and loneliness. If you are thinking about a companion, bonding needs to be done slowly and safely; do not add a rabbit in winter and hope they "sort it out" in a hutch.
What to avoid
- Do not cover the whole hutch so there is no airflow.
- Do not use electric heat pads or lamps unless they are pet-safe, chew-safe and used exactly as directed.
- Do not house rabbits in a garage with a running vehicle or fumes.
- Do not put hutches on wet concrete with no insulation.
- Do not ignore a rabbit that is limp, not eating, hunched or unusually quiet - call a rabbit-savvy vet.
Quick takeaways
- Keep rabbits dry, draught-free and sheltered, not just "outside with more hay".
- RSPCA's 10-20 C ideal range is a useful winter care reference.
- Move rabbits to a protected indoor-style area during freezing, stormy or very wet weather.
- Check water, bedding and toilet corners daily.
- Keep hay constant and provide exercise space even in winter.
- Vet-check rabbits quickly if they stop eating, become limp, hunch or seem unwell.
