NZ Lifestyle Fit

English Budgerigar (Show Budgie) is being reviewed for apartment, section, and rural Kiwi lifestyles. Use the snapshot and care notes while the NZ suitability profile is completed.

Overview

The English Budgerigar, also widely known as the Show Budgie, is a selectively bred variation of the common Australian budgerigar (*Melopsittacus undulatus*). Originally developed in the UK for exhibition purposes, they are now widely established in New Zealand. English Budgies are noticeably larger than wild-type or "pet" budgies, measuring 21 to 23cm in length and weighing up to 55g. They are characterized by their bulkier bodies, rounder heads, and long, fluffy brow feathers that partially cover their eyes, giving them a distinct, stern expression.

NZ ownership fit

Due to selective breeding, English Budgies possess a much calmer, quieter, and more docile temperament than regular budgies. They are less hyperactive, making them far easier to hand-tame and interact with. Their gentle nature makes them exceptional pets for children and beginners who want an interactive companion bird.

Care priorities

English Budgerigars require a high-quality seed mix supplemented with pellets, fresh leafy greens, and sprouted seeds. Because they are less active and more prone to obesity than regular budgies, cage size and diet must be managed carefully. Unfortunately, due to intensive breeding for show traits, their average lifespan (5–8 years) is shorter than that of regular budgies, and extreme show types can sometimes suffer from feather-cysts and respiratory issues.
