Reptile Heating and Lighting Types NZ: Heat Lamps, UVB Tubes, Ceramic Heat and Thermostats
11 June 2026
Reptile heating and lighting types in NZ: compare heat lamps, UVB tubes, ceramic heat emitters, mats and thermostats safely.
Reptile heating and lighting types in NZ must be chosen for the species, enclosure and measured temperatures, not by guessing from the box. For common legal pet reptiles such as bearded dragons, the core idea is a safe heat gradient plus suitable UVB, monitored with reliable thermometers and controlled with thermostats where appropriate.
Quick comparison
| Type | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Basking heat lamp | Daytime basking spot and visible heat | Burns, exposed bulbs and no thermostat plan |
| Linear UVB tube | Diurnal reptiles needing UVB across a basking zone | Glass or plastic blocking UVB |
| Ceramic heat emitter | Night heat without visible light | Drying, overheating and poor thermostat control |
| Heat mat | Some species/enclosure designs | Belly burns if used without control or wrong placement |
| Mercury vapour or combined bulbs | Heat and UV in one lamp for some setups | Strong output and distance requirements |
| Thermostat and thermometer | Control and monitoring | Relying on stick-on dials alone |
What to look for
VCA notes that bearded dragon heat sources should be outside the enclosure and above one end, creating a basking end. It also states UVB should be in the 290-320 nm range and not blocked by glass or plastic. Merck highlights UVB around 290-300 nm as important for many diurnal lizards and chelonians.
Temperature and UVB caution
Do not copy a single temperature from another keeper without checking the species. RSPCA's bearded dragon sheet explains the thermogradient idea: heat at one end and a cooler area at the other so the reptile can move and regulate itself. Use species-specific care sheets and an exotic/reptile vet for setup checks, especially for juveniles, breeding animals or unwell reptiles.
What to avoid
Avoid hot rocks, exposed bulbs a reptile can touch, UVB behind glass, old UVB bulbs used beyond their effective life, and any setup with no thermometer. Avoid buying a heat product before you know the species' basking, cool-end and night requirements.
NZ buying tips
- Buy the thermometer, thermostat and fixture as part of the heating plan, not as optional extras.
- In cooler NZ houses, night temperature can matter; use species guidance rather than adding random heat.
- For bearded dragons, pair heat with UVB and diet; lighting is not a decoration.
- Keep spare bulbs on hand if your reptile depends on artificial heat.
- Ask a reptile-savvy NZ vet or experienced reptile keeper to check placement before the animal moves in.
