How to Set Up a Guinea Pig Cage: NZ Beginner's Guide

5 June 2026

Guinea pigs need far more floor space than most cages provide — and company. Cage size, bedding, hides, hay and what to avoid. NZ beginner's setup guide.

The quick answer: guinea pigs need lots of ground-level floor space (most sold cages are too small), safe bedding, hides, and constant access to hay, plus — crucially — at least one guinea pig companion. They're social, ground-dwelling grazers, so a big single-level run beats a small multi-storey cage every time.

Cage size — floor space is everything

  • Guinea pigs roam and "popcorn" (happy jumps), so they need generous floor space — far more than typical pet-shop cages. A large single-level enclosure or a C&C (cubes-and-coroplast) grid setup is popular for good reason.
  • One level is fine — they don't climb like rats; ramps must be gentle and safe if used.
  • Bigger is always better, and more so for a pair (which you should have — see below).

What goes inside

  • Unlimited hay — it's ~80% of the diet and wears down their continuously-growing teeth. Keep a constant supply in a rack and/or pile. See what do guinea pigs eat in NZ.
  • Safe bedding — paper-based bedding or fleece liners. Avoid pine and cedar shavings.
  • Hides for everyone — at least one hide per guinea pig plus one spare, so no one gets cornered. Prey animals need to feel safe.
  • Food bowl, water bottle (and/or bowl), and a separate area for fresh veg.
  • A daily source of vitamin C (they can't make their own) via the right veg/pellets.

Placement and care

  • A calm spot out of direct sun and draughts, at a stable temperature — guinea pigs are sensitive to heat; see how to keep a rabbit cool in summer in NZ for the same heat-safety principles.
  • Spot-clean daily (they produce a lot); full clean regularly.
  • Floor time in a safe, enclosed space adds enrichment.

Company is essential

Guinea pigs are highly social and should not live alone — a lone guinea pig is a lonely one. Keep at least two compatible guinea pigs (same sex, or a desexed pair). See do guinea pigs need a companion in NZ.

Quick takeaways

  • Floor space first — most sold cages are too small; one big level is ideal.
  • Unlimited hay always; safe paper/fleece bedding (no pine/cedar).
  • One hide per pig plus a spare; provide daily vitamin C.
  • Keep cool and draught-free — guinea pigs are heat-sensitive.
  • Never keep just one — they need a compatible companion.
