Do Guinea Pigs Need a Companion? NZ Guide to Guinea Pig Company
5 June 2026
Do guinea pigs need a companion in NZ? Guinea pigs are highly social herd animals and almost always do best in pairs or groups. Here's how to pair them safely.
The quick answer: yes — guinea pigs are highly social herd animals and almost always do best living with at least one other guinea pig. A lone guinea pig, even with lots of human attention, usually misses out on the constant companionship they're wired for. In several places guinea pigs are even legally required to be kept in pairs or groups; in New Zealand it's strongly recommended for their welfare.
Why guinea pigs need company
In the wild, guinea pigs (cavies) live in groups and communicate constantly through squeaks, purrs and body language. Company is a core welfare need: lone guinea pigs are more prone to boredom, stress and depression-like behaviour. A compatible cavy companion provides the social contact and "talk" that humans simply can't replicate all day.
Good pairings
- Two females — usually the easiest pairing.
- A neutered male with one or more females — works well once the male is desexed (to avoid litters).
- Two males — can work, especially if introduced young or littermates, but needs enough space and resources to avoid squabbles.
Introduce new guinea pigs gradually on neutral ground, with enough space, two of everything (hides, water, food spots), and a vet check first. Never house guinea pigs with rabbits — different needs, communication and disease risks.
Space and the rest of good welfare
Company is one pillar; guinea pigs also need a roomy hutch/cage (bigger than most pet-shop cages), daily fresh hay and vitamin-C–rich veg, floor time, and gentle handling. See first guinea pig / rabbit setup NZ and what do guinea pigs eat NZ.
Quick takeaways
- Guinea pigs are herd animals — keep at least two.
- Easiest pairs: two females, or a neutered male with females.
- Introduce gradually, neutral ground, two of everything, vet check first.
- Don't house guinea pigs with rabbits.
- Company + space + hay/vitamin-C diet + handling = good welfare.
