Can Cats Eat Raw Chicken? NZ Safety Answer
11 June 2026
Can cats eat raw chicken in NZ? Avoid it unless part of a vet-led plan. Raw food carries bacterial and balance risks.
Quick answer
Avoid raw chicken as an ad hoc cat treat. VCA says raw food diets for cats raise infectious-disease, nutritional-balance and foreign-body concerns.
Why
Cats are obligate carnivores, but that does not make raw chicken from the supermarket a safe shortcut. It can contaminate bowls, benches and hands, and bones add a separate risk.
If your cat ate it
Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.
Safer alternatives
Use complete cat food, or ask your NZ vet before changing to any raw feeding plan. For treats, choose cat-specific treats or part of the cat's normal food.
