Can Dogs Eat Potatoes? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat potatoes in NZ? Plain cooked potato only in moderation; avoid raw, green or seasoned potatoes.

Quick answer

Plain cooked potato may be okay in small amounts, but raw, green or seasoned potatoes are not dog treats. ASPCA's garden safety guidance distinguishes cooked potatoes from raw potato risks.

Why

Potatoes in NZ homes are often served as chips, roast potatoes, buttery mash, gratin, hash browns or takeaways, which are not plain. Green or sprouting potatoes and garden scraps should not be offered to dogs.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

If sharing, keep it plain, cooked and tiny. Better routine options are carrot, cucumber, prepared apple or normal dog food used as a reward.
