Can Dogs Eat Cooked Bones? NZ Safety Answer
11 June 2026
Can dogs eat cooked bones in NZ? No. Cooked bones can splinter or obstruct. What to do and safer chew alternatives.
Quick answer
No. Dogs should not eat cooked bones. SPCA NZ says cooked bones should never be fed to dogs because of splintering risk, and VCA notes bones are a common BBQ obstruction hazard.
Why
Cooked chicken, lamb, pork, steak and roast bones are not safe leftovers. They can break, lodge, or become a foreign-body problem, especially when a dog grabs them from the rubbish, bach barbecue, roast dinner plate or beach picnic bin.
If your dog ate it
Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.
Safer alternatives
Use vet-approved dog chews, durable food toys, dental products suited to your dog, or normal food in enrichment feeders. Do not swap cooked bones for unsupervised bones from the table.
