Raw chicken frequently carries bacteria such as *Salmonella*, *Listeria monocytogenes*, and *Campylobacter*. Ingestion of these pathogens can cause acute bacterial gastroenteritis in dogs, resulting in bloody diarrhea, vomiting, high fever, abdominal pain, and severe dehydration. Beyond the risk to your dog, raw chicken poses a serious zoonotic public health risk. Dogs eating raw meat shed these bacteria in their feces and saliva, which can easily infect humans in the household—particularly children, the elderly, or pregnant women. Additionally, raw chicken bones (like wings or necks) are a major foreign-body risk, capable of splintering, lacerating the esophagus, or causing a bowel obstruction.
How much is a problem
Raw chicken should not be fed as a treat or part of an unregulated home diet. Feeding even a single piece of contaminated raw chicken can lead to infection. The risk is not dose-dependent when it comes to active bacterial pathogens.
If your dog has eaten it
If your dog consumed raw chicken, monitor them over the next 24 to 72 hours. Look for symptoms of bacterial infection: fever, vomiting, watery or bloody diarrhea, loss of appetite, and extreme lethargy. Also, if they swallowed raw bones whole, watch for signs of choking, gagging, drooling, or vomiting, which may indicate a physical obstruction in the throat or digestive tract.
Safer alternatives
If you want to feed chicken, the safest method is to offer small pieces of plain, boneless, skinless chicken breast that has been thoroughly boiled or baked without any oils, salt, garlic, or onions.
