Can Dogs Eat Cooked Chicken? NZ Safety Answer
13 June 2026
Can dogs eat cooked chicken in NZ? Plain cooked boneless chicken can be okay; avoid bones and seasoning.
Quick answer
Yes, dogs can usually eat plain cooked boneless chicken as an occasional food extra. It must be free from cooked bones, skin-heavy scraps, onion, garlic, gravy, stuffing and seasoning.
Why
ASPCA lists small amounts of lean cooked chicken among meats that can be shared with pets when free of bones and seasoning. ASPCA's foods-to-avoid guidance also warns about raw or undercooked meat and bones. In NZ homes, the risky version is roast chicken bones, barbecue marinades, stuffing, gravy, garlic butter or takeaway chicken scraps.
If your dog ate it
Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice, especially if the food contained a known toxin or your pet seems unwell.
Safer alternatives
Use complete dog food as the main diet. For training, use your dog's normal kibble or tiny pieces of plain cooked boneless chicken only when it suits their diet and digestion.
