Can Cats Eat Onions? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can cats eat onions in NZ? No. Onion, garlic, chives and leeks are unsafe for cats. What to do and safer alternatives.

Quick answer

No. Cats should not eat onions. VCA's cat toxic-hazard guidance lists onion, chives, leeks, shallots and garlic as hazards for cats, and ASPCA also lists onion and garlic among people foods pets should avoid.

Why

Onion is often hidden in foods cats may lick or steal: gravy, mince, roast leftovers, soups, sauces, baby food, pizza toppings and seasoned tuna or chicken. Powdered onion and garlic seasoning still count. This is a bigger risk in shared kitchens where plates are left out after dinner.

If your cat ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Use complete cat food or a cat-specific treat. If you want to offer plain cooked meat, ask your NZ vet what is suitable for your cat and keep it unseasoned.
