Can Cats Eat Chocolate? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can cats eat chocolate in NZ? No. Chocolate is toxic to cats. What to do and safer cat treat ideas.

Quick answer

No. Cats should not eat chocolate. VCA explains that chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, both toxic to cats and dogs, and VCA's cat hazard guidance lists chocolate among cat toxins.

Why

Cats may be less likely than dogs to seek sweet food, but chocolate still matters in real homes: baking, cocoa, chocolate biscuits, ice cream, Christmas chocolate, Easter eggs and wrappers can all attract curious cats. Darker or baking products are not the only concern; do not offer any chocolate.

If your cat ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Use cat treats or part of your cat's normal food as a reward. For enrichment, try food puzzles with complete cat food rather than sharing dessert.
