Can Cats Drink Milk? NZ Safety Answer
11 June 2026
Can cats drink milk in NZ? Usually no. Many cats cannot digest milk well. Use water and complete cat food instead.
Quick answer
Usually no. Milk is a common cat myth, but VCA says cats should not be fed milk, and notes that many cats lose the ability to digest milk sugar after kittenhood. Milk can upset a cat's stomach.
Why
Cats need fresh water and complete cat food, not cow's milk. Milk can also displace balanced food, especially in kittens. If a kitten needs milk support, that is a vet or kitten-formula question, not a reason to use ordinary cow's milk.
If your cat ate it
If the food was not plain, included a toxic ingredient, your pet seems unwell, or you are unsure what was eaten, contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.
Safer alternatives
Offer fresh water and a complete cat food. For kittens or cats with poor appetite, contact your NZ vet rather than improvising with milk.
