Can Dogs Eat Watermelon? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat watermelon in NZ? Plain flesh only in small pieces; avoid rind, seeds and large chunks.

Quick answer

Plain watermelon flesh may be okay in small amounts, but rind and large chunks are not good dog treats. VCA lists watermelon rinds among indigestible food parts that can cause obstruction.

Why

At summer barbecues, dogs often get access to discarded rinds or big slices. That is different from a few small seedless cubes of plain flesh. Avoid salted, boozy or dessert versions.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Offer tiny pieces of plain flesh only, or use cucumber, carrot or normal dog food for enrichment. Put rinds into a secure bin.
