Can Dogs Eat Pumpkin? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat pumpkin in NZ? Plain cooked pumpkin can be an occasional treat. Avoid pie mix, seasoning and unsafe add-ins.

Quick answer

Yes, dogs can usually eat plain cooked pumpkin as an occasional treat if it is unseasoned and your dog tolerates it. Keep it simple: cooked pumpkin flesh only, not pumpkin pie mix, roast leftovers with onion or garlic, buttered mash, soup, spices or sweet baking.

Why

Pumpkin is a familiar NZ kitchen food, especially in winter roasts, soups and kumara-pumpkin mash. The dog-safe version is plain and separate from the human meal. Problems usually come from what is added around it: onion, garlic, salt, butter, cream, stock powder, chilli, nutmeg, pastry, sweeteners or rich leftovers.

ASPCA lists pumpkin among foods that can be shared with pets, and VCA's fruit and vegetable guidance stresses plain preparation and avoiding parts or versions that create choking, blockage or ingredient risks.

If your dog ate it

If the pumpkin was not plain, included a toxic ingredient, your dog seems unwell, or you are unsure what was eaten, contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Use plain cooked pumpkin only as a small treat or food-topper style extra, while keeping a complete dog food as the main diet. Other simple options are plain carrot, cucumber, prepared apple or your dog's normal kibble in a puzzle feeder.
