Can Dogs Eat Peanut Butter? NZ Safety Answer
11 June 2026
Can dogs eat peanut butter in NZ? Only if it is xylitol-free and plain. Check labels and use sparingly.
Quick answer
Only if it is xylitol-free and plain, and only as an occasional treat. ASPCA notes that some peanut butter products contain xylitol, and Pet Poison Helpline identifies xylitol as toxic to dogs.
Why
The biggest safety check is the ingredient label. Avoid sugar-free, sweetened, chocolate-flavoured, salty or heavily processed peanut butter. Peanut butter is also rich, so it can upset some dogs or be inappropriate for dogs with medical or weight concerns.
If your dog ate it
If the food was not plain, included a toxic ingredient, your pet seems unwell, or you are unsure what was eaten, contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.
Safer alternatives
Use xylitol-free plain peanut butter only when suitable, or choose plain banana, prepared apple pieces, or normal kibble in a food toy. If you are using it for medication, ask your NZ vet first.
