Can Dogs Eat Oranges? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat oranges in NZ? Tiny peeled pieces only if tolerated; avoid peel, seeds, leaves and large amounts.

Quick answer

Tiny peeled pieces may be tolerated by some dogs, but oranges are not necessary and should not be a routine treat. SPCA NZ warns that citrus oils and acids in citrus plant parts, peel, fruit and seeds can cause problems in large amounts.

Why

The safer version is very small, peeled, seed-free flesh. Orange peel, compost scraps, whole fruit, marmalade, juice and sweet baking are different. Many dogs simply do not need the acidity or sugar.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Safer options are tiny pieces of plain, prepared fruit or veg your pet already tolerates, or part of their normal complete food used as a treat. Keep portions small and avoid sweetened, salted or seasoned versions.
