Can Dogs Eat Onions? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat onions in NZ? No. Onion, garlic, chives and leeks can be toxic to dogs. What to do and safer options.

Quick answer

No. Dogs should not eat onions. The same caution applies to garlic, chives and leeks. VCA explains that this allium group can make pets sick, and ASPCA lists onions and related foods among people foods to avoid.

Why

Onion risk is easy to miss because it is often hidden in cooked food: sausages, gravy, stuffing, burger patties, stir-fries, soups, pizza, leftovers and baby food. Powdered onion and garlic seasoning are still relevant. This is why plain-looking leftovers can be unsafe for dogs.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Offer plain, unseasoned dog-safe foods only if your dog is allowed treats, such as prepared apple pieces or a little banana. For meals, use a complete dog food rather than seasoned human leftovers.
