Can Dogs Eat Mushrooms? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat mushrooms in NZ? Avoid them. Wild mushrooms can be dangerous, and plain shop mushrooms are not worth the risk.

Quick answer

Avoid mushrooms for dogs, and treat wild mushroom eating as a vet question. SPCA NZ warns that mushrooms and toadstools can be poisonous and even fatal for dogs.

Why

The practical danger is identification. NZ lawns, parks, lifestyle blocks, bush edges and damp gardens can grow mushrooms that look ordinary to a non-expert. Cooked mushrooms may also carry butter, garlic, onion, salt or sauces.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Choose a clearer treat such as plain carrot, cucumber, prepared apple or your dog's normal food. Remove yard mushrooms when you see them and supervise dogs that scavenge.
