Can Dogs Eat Macadamia Nuts? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat macadamia nuts in NZ? No. Macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs. What to do and safer snack ideas.

Quick answer

No. Dogs should not eat macadamia nuts. ASPCA Animal Poison Control specifically warns that macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs, and ASPCA's people-food guidance also lists them among foods pets should avoid.

Why

Macadamia nuts can appear in biscuits, slices, chocolate, trail mixes and gift boxes, not just in a nut bowl. They may also be combined with chocolate or xylitol-containing products, which adds extra risk. Do not use mixed nuts as dog treats.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Choose dog-safe treats, prepared apple pieces or plain banana instead. Keep nut mixes and baking ingredients out of reach, especially around holidays and shared-office food.
