Can Dogs Eat Corn Cobs? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat corn cobs in NZ? No. Corn cobs can block the gut. What to do and safer summer food ideas.

Quick answer

No. Dogs should not eat corn cobs. VCA and Pet Poison Helpline both describe corn cobs as a serious obstruction risk even though corn itself is not the toxin.

Why

The classic NZ risk is a dog stealing a cob from the barbecue plate, compost bucket, picnic rubbish or camping bin. Corn kernels are different from the cob. The cob is hard to digest and can get stuck.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

If you want to share plain corn, cut a few kernels off the cob and keep it unseasoned. Put cobs straight into a secure bin that your dog cannot raid.
