Can Dogs Eat Chocolate? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat chocolate in NZ? No. Chocolate is toxic to dogs. What to do, why it is risky and safer alternatives.

Quick answer

No. Dogs should not eat chocolate. VCA explains that chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs process differently from people and which can make dogs seriously unwell.

Why

The risk changes with the type of chocolate and the dog, so home maths is not a safe plan. Dark chocolate, baking chocolate, cocoa powder, chocolate desserts, chocolate biscuits and wrapped Easter or Christmas chocolate all count as possible exposures. In NZ households, the danger is often a dog finding chocolate in school bags, handbags, gift boxes or low pantry shelves.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Use dog treats, plain banana, prepared apple pieces or xylitol-free peanut butter as occasional treat options. Keep human chocolate for humans, and store it where dogs cannot reach it.
