Can Dogs Eat Cheese? NZ Safety Answer
11 June 2026
Can dogs eat cheese in NZ? Sometimes only as a limited plain treat. Dairy can upset some dogs and seasoned cheese is risky.
Quick answer
Sometimes, but only as a limited plain treat if your dog tolerates dairy. ASPCA's people-food guidance flags milk and dairy as foods that can cause digestive upset in pets because they do not have enough lactase to handle large amounts of milk products.
Why
Cheese is fatty, salty and easy to overuse. Flavoured cheeses can contain onion, garlic, herbs, chilli or other ingredients that are not dog-safe. Cheese is also not a balanced food, so it should not replace normal dog meals.
If your dog ate it
If the food was not plain, included a toxic ingredient, your pet seems unwell, or you are unsure what was eaten, contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.
Safer alternatives
Use your dog's normal kibble, dog treats, plain banana or prepared apple pieces for training. If you need a soft food for giving medication, ask your NZ vet what is appropriate for your dog.
