Can Dogs Eat Avocado? NZ Safety Answer
11 June 2026
Can dogs eat avocado in NZ? Best avoided. Avocado can cause stomach upset and the stone/skin are risky. Safer dog treats.
Quick answer
Best avoided. Avocado is not a good dog treat. ASPCA lists avocado among people foods to avoid feeding pets, and its avocado guidance notes that the plant parts contain persin and can cause digestive upset in dogs, with other animals being more sensitive.
Why
For dogs, the practical NZ household risks are the fatty flesh, skin, leaves, and especially the stone, which can be swallowed or chewed. Guacamole and avocado toast may also contain onion, garlic, salt, chilli or other ingredients that are not dog-safe.
If your dog ate it
If the food was not plain, included a toxic ingredient, your pet seems unwell, or you are unsure what was eaten, contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.
Safer alternatives
Choose a simpler treat: plain banana, prepared apple pieces, or a small amount of xylitol-free peanut butter if your dog tolerates it. Keep avocado stones and compost scraps away from dogs.
