Can Dogs Eat Apples? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat apples in NZ? Usually yes if plain and prepared. Remove core and seeds, and avoid apple desserts.

Quick answer

Usually yes, if the apple is plain, washed and prepared. ASPCA includes apples among fruits that can be shared with pets, and VCA advises removing cores, seeds, stems and similar parts to reduce choking or blockage risk.

Why

Apple slices are different from apple pie, apple crumble, dried fruit mixes or anything with raisins, chocolate, xylitol, spices or high sugar. For dogs, the safer version is plain fruit only, with the core and seeds removed.

If your dog ate it

If the food was not plain, included a toxic ingredient, your pet seems unwell, or you are unsure what was eaten, contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Prepared apple pieces, plain banana, or a dog-specific treat are better choices than sweet baking. Keep fruit bowls and lunchboxes out of reach if your dog scavenges.
