Can Dogs Drink Coffee? NZ Safety Answer

13 June 2026

Can dogs drink coffee in NZ? No. Coffee and caffeine are unsafe for dogs. What to do if your dog drank coffee.

Quick answer

No. Dogs should not drink coffee or eat coffee grounds, coffee beans, energy drinks, caffeine tablets or espresso-flavoured foods. Caffeine is a pet-poisoning concern, so this is not a treat or training-food option.

Why

Pet Poison Helpline has a specific caffeine poisoning page, and ASPCA's people-foods list includes coffee and caffeine among foods to avoid for pets. In NZ homes, the common exposures are a dog licking a flat white, raiding a keep cup, eating coffee grounds from the bin, or getting into tiramisu, mocha baking, energy drinks or gym supplements.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Use fresh water, your dog's normal complete food, or a dog-safe treat. Keep coffee grounds, pods, keep cups, energy drinks and caffeine supplements out of reach, especially in cars, bach kitchens and home offices.
