Can Cats Eat Hot Cross Buns? NZ Safety Answer
13 June 2026
Can cats eat hot cross buns in NZ? No. Raisins, currants, sultanas, spices and sweet bakery foods are not cat food.
Quick answer
No. Cats should not eat hot cross buns. Many contain raisins, currants or sultanas, plus spices, sugar, butter or chocolate-style ingredients that are not appropriate for cats.
Why
ASPCA lists grapes and raisins among people foods to avoid for pets, and Pet Poison Helpline has a grapes page. ASPCA's pumpkin spice guidance also warns about spice exposure in pets. In NZ homes, cats may lick crumbs, buttered buns, Easter baking, lunchboxes or cafe leftovers, but there is no benefit to offering this food.
If your cat ate it
Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.
Safer alternatives
Use complete cat food or a cat-specific treat. Keep Easter baking, lunchboxes and raisin-containing foods away from cats.
