Can Cats Eat Cinnamon? NZ Safety Answer
13 June 2026
Can cats eat cinnamon in NZ? Avoid cinnamon powder, essential oils and spiced desserts. What to do if your cat ate cinnamon.
Quick answer
Avoid cinnamon for cats. Cats do not need spices, and cinnamon powder, essential oils, spice mixes and heavily spiced desserts are not appropriate cat foods.
Why
Pet Poison Helpline's nutmeg and cinnamon toxicity guidance warns that large amounts of cinnamon and concentrated products can be a concern. ASPCA's pumpkin spice guidance also warns about spice exposure for pets. In NZ homes, likely sources include chai, cinnamon scrolls, hot cross buns, Christmas baking, spice jars, potpourri-style products and cafe leftovers.
If your cat ate it
Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.
Safer alternatives
Use complete cat food or a cat-specific treat. Keep spice jars, scented oils, baking mixes and spiced desserts away from cats.
