Do Dogs Dream? NZ Guide to Twitching, Paddling and Sleep

5 June 2026

Do dogs dream? Almost certainly yes — those twitches, paddles and soft woofs in sleep are normal. Here's what's happening, and when sleep movements need a vet.

The quick answer: yes — the evidence strongly suggests dogs dream. Like us, dogs have a REM (rapid eye movement) sleep stage, and the twitching paws, "paddling" legs, soft woofs, whimpers and flickering eyelids you see are typical of a dog in REM sleep. It's normal and nothing to worry about. The main thing owners need to know is how to tell ordinary dream movements from a seizure.

What's happening when your dog dreams

  • REM sleep — dogs cycle through sleep stages including REM, where dreaming occurs.
  • Twitches and paddling — small leg movements, paw twitches and tail flicks are classic dream signs.
  • Sounds — soft woofs, whimpers, "muffled barks" and lip movements.
  • Puppies and seniors dream more — and often more dramatically, as their sleep regulation differs from healthy adults.

It's a sign of a relaxed, deeply sleeping dog. For more on settling and sleep rituals, see why does my dog circle before lying down NZ.

"Let sleeping dogs lie"

Avoid waking a dreaming dog suddenly — a startled dog can snap on reflex before it's fully awake. If you must wake them, use your voice gently from a distance rather than touching them. Use the Dog Behaviour Decoder to read their relaxed sleep cues.

Dream movements vs a seizure (important)

Normal dreaming and a seizure look different:

  • Dreaming — gentle, intermittent twitches/paddling; your dog can be woken by your voice and will then act normally.
  • A seizure — stiff or violent, rhythmic jerking; the dog is unresponsive, can't be roused, may drool, lose bladder/bowel control, and is disoriented afterwards.

If you see seizure-like signs, or you're ever unsure, that is not a dream — contact a vet.

Quick takeaways

  • Dogs almost certainly dream; twitching, paddling and soft woofs in REM sleep are normal.
  • Puppies and seniors often dream more dramatically.
  • Don't wake a dreaming dog abruptly — use your voice gently.
  • Stiff/violent jerking, unresponsive, drooling or disoriented = possible seizure → vet.
