Origins & History
The Bernedoodle is a hybrid cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle (usually Standard or Miniature). First intentionally bred in the early 2000s, this cross was developed to create a companion dog combining the gentle, placid, and intensely loyal nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog with the intelligence and low-shedding coat of the Poodle. They have quickly gained popularity in New Zealand for their striking coat patterns and gentle-giant temperament.
Crossbreed Characteristics & Size Variations
As a crossbreed, Bernedoodles can vary significantly in appearance and size. They can be Standard (25 to 40+ kg), Mini (12 to 24 kg), or Tiny (5 to 11 kg), depending on the size of the Poodle parent. While many buyers seek the standard size, standard Bernedoodles are very large, powerful dogs. Like all doodle crosses, there is no guarantee a Bernedoodle will not shed or be hypoallergenic. F1 crosses (50% Bernese, 50% Poodle) may still shed, while F1b (75% Poodle, 25% Bernese) crosses tend to have tighter, lower-shedding curls.
Coat Types & Intense Grooming Commitment
Bernedoodles can have wavy fleece coats or tight curly wool coats. Due to the Bernese Mountain Dog's extremely dense, heavy double coat, Bernedoodles often have incredibly thick hair. This makes them highly prone to severe, painful matting close to the skin if not brushed daily down to the roots. Grooming a Bernedoodle is an extensive, life-long commitment. Professional clipping is required every 6 to 8 weeks, costing approximately $120 to $200+ NZD per session in New Zealand due to their size and coat density.
Temperament & Heat Sensitivity
Bernedoodles are goofy, affectionate, and deeply loyal. They inherit the Poodle's active mind and the Bernese Mountain Dog's calm, gentle attitude. Standard Bernedoodles can be placid 'couch potatoes' indoors but need regular outdoor exercise. A major breed characteristic is heat sensitivity. Because of the Bernese heritage, they have low tolerance for heat. During New Zealand summers, they need plenty of shade, cool water, and must not be exercised in the heat of the day.
