Can Dogs Eat Onion Gravy? NZ Safety Answer

13 June 2026

Can dogs eat onion gravy in NZ? No. Onion, garlic, chives and leeks can damage red blood cells.

Quick answer

No. Dogs should not eat onion gravy. Gravy made with onion, garlic, chives, leeks, stock powders or allium-heavy leftovers is not dog-safe.

Why

Pet Poison Helpline states that onion, chives, garlic and leeks are poisonous to dogs and cats because Allium foods can damage red blood cells and cause gut distress. ASPCA also lists onion, garlic and chives among people foods to avoid. In NZ homes, the exposure is usually roast gravy, sausage-and-onion gravy, takeaway leftovers, pie filling, stock powder or a Sunday roast plate.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice, especially if the food contained a known toxin or your pet seems unwell.

Safer alternatives

Use your dog's normal complete food or a dog-safe topper recommended by your vet or food label. If you want moisture, use plain water on kibble rather than onion gravy, stock or roast-pan drippings.
