Can Dogs Eat Oats? NZ Safety Answer

13 June 2026

Can dogs eat oats in NZ? Plain cooked oats can be okay occasionally; avoid sweet porridge toppings.

Quick answer

Dogs can usually have plain cooked oats occasionally, but avoid sweetened porridge, milk-heavy bowls, chocolate, raisins, xylitol, salt and flavoured sachets.

Why

SPCA NZ uses rolled oats in homemade dog treat recipes, and ASPCA's avoid guidance covers chocolate, raisins, xylitol and salty foods. NZ breakfast bowls and baking can include milk, sugar, raisins, chocolate, syrup or flavour sachets, so plain oats are the safer version.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice, especially if the food contained a known toxin or your pet seems unwell.

Safer alternatives

Use complete dog food as the main diet. For treats, use dog-safe treats, normal kibble or plain homemade treats that avoid toxic ingredients.
