Can Dogs Eat Lunch Meat? NZ Safety Answer
13 June 2026
Can dogs eat lunch meat in NZ? Avoid processed lunch meat; it is often salty and seasoned.
Quick answer
Avoid giving lunch meat to dogs. Processed slices are often salty, fatty, smoked or seasoned, and may contain onion, garlic, preservatives or rich sauces.
Why
ASPCA's shareable-food guidance says lean cooked meats should be free of bones and seasoning, and it cautions against processed meats such as lunch meat or bacon because they can be high in salt. NZ lunch meat also often appears with spreads, pickles and bread scraps.
If your dog ate it
Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice, especially if the food contained a known toxin or your pet seems unwell.
Safer alternatives
Safer options are your dog's normal complete food, a dog-safe treat, or a plain prepared food already covered by a reliable pet-safe source. Keep human leftovers, sauces and seasoned scraps out of reach.
