Can Cats Eat Peanut Butter? NZ Safety Answer

13 June 2026

Can cats eat peanut butter in NZ? Only plain xylitol-free peanut butter, if at all; it is fatty.

Quick answer

Peanut butter is not a useful cat treat. If used at all, it must be plain and xylitol-free; avoid chocolate, sugar-free, salty and flavoured spreads.

Why

ASPCA's shareable-food guidance discusses peanut butter for pets and warns to check for xylitol, while Pet Poison Helpline identifies xylitol as a serious pet poison. Peanut butter is also fatty, and cats do not need plant-based spreads.

If your cat ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice, especially if the food contained a known toxin or your pet seems unwell.

Safer alternatives

Use complete cat food, cat-specific treats or a tiny plain cooked meat piece if suitable. If peanut butter is used for medication, ask your NZ vet first.
