Can Cats Eat Cucumber? NZ Safety Answer

13 June 2026

Can cats eat cucumber in NZ? Plain cucumber is not toxic, but cats do not need vegetable treats.

Quick answer

Plain cucumber is not toxic to cats, but it is not needed in a cat's diet. If a cat wants a nibble, keep it washed, plain and away from dressings, onion, garlic or salty salads.

Why

VCA lists cucumbers among fruit and vegetable options for pets, and ASPCA includes cucumbers in its pet-safe fruit list. Cats are obligate carnivores, so cucumber should never replace complete cat food. In NZ homes, cucumber is often mixed into salads, sushi, dips or lunchboxes, where sauces and seasoning are the bigger issue.

If your cat ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice, especially if the food contained a known toxin or your pet seems unwell.

Safer alternatives

Cats are obligate carnivores, so use complete cat food as the main diet. If you offer a plant-based nibble, keep it plain, washed, unseasoned and secondary to proper cat food.
