Can Cats Eat Watermelon? NZ Safety Answer

13 June 2026

Can cats eat watermelon in NZ? Plain watermelon flesh can be okay as a tiny nibble; avoid rind and seeds.

Quick answer

Cats can usually have a tiny piece of plain watermelon flesh, but they do not need fruit. Remove rind and seeds and avoid fruit salad, syrup, alcohol desserts and grape-containing mixes.

Why

VCA's fruit and vegetable guidance includes watermelon among produce options for pets. In NZ summer meals, watermelon may be served in fruit salad or desserts, so plain flesh is a different question from mixed bowls with grapes, alcohol or sweet syrups.

If your cat ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice, especially if the food contained a known toxin or your pet seems unwell.

Safer alternatives

Cats are obligate carnivores, so use complete cat food as the main diet. If you offer a plant-based nibble, keep it plain, washed, unseasoned and secondary to proper cat food.
