Can Cats Eat Pumpkin? NZ Safety Answer
13 June 2026
Can cats eat pumpkin in NZ? Plain cooked pumpkin is different from spiced, buttery or sweet pumpkin foods.
Quick answer
Cats can sometimes eat plain cooked pumpkin, but it should be unseasoned and secondary to complete cat food. Avoid pumpkin with butter, onion, garlic, salt, gravy, pie spices or sweet desserts.
Why
ASPCA lists cooked pumpkin among vegetable snack options for pets. For NZ cats, the issue is usually the human-food context: roast pumpkin with seasoning, pumpkin soup with onion or stock, pumpkin pie-style spice, buttered mash or leftovers from a roast dinner.
If your cat ate it
Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice, especially if the food contained a known toxin or your pet seems unwell.
Safer alternatives
Use complete cat food as the main diet. If your vet has suggested fibre support, follow their plan; otherwise use cat-specific treats rather than sweet or seasoned pumpkin dishes.
