How Often Should You Feed Fish? NZ Aquarium Feeding Guide
4 June 2026
How often to feed aquarium fish in NZ? Usually once or twice a day, only what they eat in a couple of minutes. Overfeeding is the #1 beginner mistake — here's why.
The quick answer: feed most aquarium fish once or twice a day, only as much as they finish in about 1–2 minutes, and remove any uneaten food. The single biggest beginner mistake is overfeeding — leftover food rots, fouls the water, spikes ammonia and makes fish sick. With fish, underfeeding is far safer than overfeeding.
How much, how often
- Frequency: once or twice daily for most community fish. Many fish do fine on one feed a day.
- Amount: a small pinch they finish in ~1–2 minutes. If food sinks uneaten, you gave too much.
- Remove leftovers: net out uneaten food so it doesn't decay.
- Fasting: many keepers skip one day a week for adult fish — it's fine and can aid digestion (research your specific species).
Why overfeeding is dangerous
Uneaten food and extra waste break down into ammonia and nitrite, which are toxic to fish, and feed algae. In a small tank this happens fast. Most "my fish keep dying" problems trace back to overfeeding + poor water quality, not too little food. Feed light, watch the fish eat, and keep up water changes.
Match food to your fish
Different fish feed differently — surface feeders, mid-water, and bottom feeders — so use the right food type (flake, pellet, sinking wafer) and make sure bottom-dwellers actually get some. Check the needs of your species; a betta, goldfish and a pleco don't eat the same way. See beginner betta & goldfish care NZ and the beginner aquarium NZ guide.
NZ context
If you use an automatic feeder for holidays, set it conservatively (fish survive a few days unfed better than they survive fouled water). Store fish food sealed and cool — NZ humidity degrades it.
Quick takeaways
- Feed once or twice daily, only what's eaten in 1–2 minutes.
- Overfeeding (not underfeeding) is the main killer — it wrecks water quality.
- Remove uneaten food.
- Match food type to whether fish feed at the surface, middle or bottom.
- Keep up regular water changes alongside careful feeding.
