Can Dogs Eat Pork? NZ Safety Answer

11 June 2026

Can dogs eat pork in NZ? Only plain lean cooked pork in tiny amounts; avoid bones, fat, seasoning and processed pork.

Quick answer

Only plain lean cooked pork in tiny amounts, if your dog tolerates it. ASPCA says small amounts of lean cooked pork without bones or seasoning can be okay, but processed meats like bacon should be avoided.

Why

Most pork eaten by people is not plain: crackling, roast fat, bacon, ham, sausages, marinades, garlic, onion, salt and barbecue sauce all change the risk. Pork bones are also not safe table scraps.

If your dog ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice.

Safer alternatives

Choose dog treats or a small amount of plain lean cooked meat with no bones or seasoning. Keep roast scraps and barbecue leftovers out of reach.
