Can Cats Eat Pork? NZ Safety Answer

13 June 2026

Can cats eat pork in NZ? Plain cooked pork can be okay as a tiny treat; avoid ham, bacon and seasoning.

Quick answer

Cats can usually have a tiny piece of plain cooked pork, but skip ham, bacon, sausages, crackling, bones, marinades, onion, garlic and salty processed pork.

Why

ASPCA lists small amounts of lean cooked pork among meats that may be shared with pets, but its foods-to-avoid guidance warns about salty foods, raw or undercooked meat and bones. NZ pork is often offered as ham, bacon, sausage, roast crackling or marinated barbecue scraps, which are different from plain lean cooked pork.

If your cat ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice, especially if the food contained a known toxin or your pet seems unwell.

Safer alternatives

Use complete cat food as the main diet. If sharing pork at all, keep it plain, lean, cooked, boneless and separate from processed meats, gravy, stuffing and sauces.
