Can Cats Eat Cooked Chicken? NZ Safety Answer

Can cats eat cooked chicken in NZ? Plain cooked boneless chicken can be okay; avoid bones and seasoning.

Quick answer

Yes, cats can usually eat a little plain cooked boneless chicken, but it should not replace complete cat food. Avoid cooked bones, skin-heavy scraps, onion, garlic, gravy, stuffing and seasoning.

Why

ASPCA lists small amounts of lean cooked chicken among meats that can be shared with pets when free of bones and seasoning. ASPCA's foods-to-avoid guidance also warns about raw or undercooked meat and bones. NZ cats often get offered roast chicken, barbecue leftovers or takeaway scraps, so plain boneless chicken is a different question from seasoned leftovers.

If your cat ate it

Contact your NZ vet, after-hours emergency clinic, or SPCA for advice, especially if the food contained a known toxin or your pet seems unwell.

Safer alternatives

Use complete cat food as the main diet. For a treat, use a cat-specific treat or a tiny piece of plain cooked boneless chicken if your cat tolerates it.
